Today I am sharing Zachary’s Montessori bedroom from age 1 to 4. We have always used a floor bed, which is just a spring twin mattress on the floor. Zachary has fallen off his mattress several times however the carpet helps to keep any falls cushioned. He has never gotten hurt by falling off and his sleep has very rarely been disturbed as well. (I just realized how lucky we got!) So we usually leave him sleeping on the carpet if he ends up there, however we reposition his blanket or comforter so he doesn’t get cold.
The decor is minimalistic as you can see. (A.k.a. we just never got around to it.) Zach uses a linear calendar here in his room. Other than that, we have a bookcase and a child-sized table and chair, but that’s about it.
Both boys have their own rooms now, however for about a year since last fall, Matthew slept in the same room with Zachary, both on floor mattresses. The room is very tiny, so both mattresses lay next to each other. It was amazing to see the bond between brothers flourish from this arrangement.
We actually started doing this to save on heating costs during the winter. But we got more than that — we (and they) now have fond memories of brothers giggling in the night, Zach singing or talking to himself while keeping Matt up, Zach coming over to our room in the middle of the night because Matt had completely taken over both beds (while Zach fell to a small gap between the wall and mattress), or me threatening them if they don’t hush and go to sleep. Ahh … good memories.
The reason why I said “from the ages of 1 to 4” is because this is now in the past as of mid-September. We recently had to upgrade from floor beds to pull-out daybeds in order to accommodate both my husband’s and my parents, who take turns coming to visit us for 3 to 5 months at a time during the summer. We used to just put everyone on floor beds, parents included, but this is becoming a big challenge as our parents get older. I loved the simplicity of their floor beds, but I’m not complaining so long as we keep getting summer visitors!
