Z is only two months away from turning 3 years old, but he is still very focused and interested in Practical Life activities, and not at all interested in the Montessori Sensorial materials. I’m following the child, so I continue to feed his interests and trust that he will approach the other materials when he’s ready.
The latest introduction and craze is the Montessori Clothes Hanging Activity. I found the perfect table-top clothesline stand. It was actually an awesome hack using the Melissa & Doug Wooden Abacus (read about it here).
I placed a small washcloth and a couple of clothespins in a basket, and this basket goes on his shelf along with the table-top clothesline stand.
He worked on this a few times. The tricky part is evenly distributing the washcloth over both sides of the clothesline — this took lots of practice and patience. But once he got it, he was always pleased with himself.
Then one day, he decided the washcloth was too boring and he needed to hang up socks instead. So he removed his socks on the spot and hung them up! I didn’t mind this at all, and I just totally love how he removed his socks.
